Biography

For 26+ years, David Sousa worked at Curi (formerly Medical Mutual), most recently (through 4/25/2022) as its Chief Legal Officer. At Curi, he oversaw the Claims, Risk Management, Information Technology, Communications, Health Policy, Member Benefits and Human Resources functions. For six years he served as its COO. He led the company's Community and Advisory Boards in five states in its geographic footprint. Prior to joining Medical Mutual, he practiced law in Raleigh for fifteen years and represented physicians in the defense of malpractice claims throughout North Carolina.

He holds a JD degree from Wake Forest University, and his M.B.A. and B.A. from the University of Kentucky.

From 2011 through April, 2022 he led a large coalition of healthcare sector members focused on the preservation of a fair litigation climate for that sector in NC. Over his tenure with Curi he spoke to more than 10,000 healthcare providers throughout the U.S. on a myriad of topics pertaining to healthcare liability. He testified before legislative bodies and committees about, and wrote on, healthcare liability reform issues. He is currently an advisor to the American Law Institute, in the revisions to the Restatement of Torts, 3rd Medical Liability section.

He is a Permanent Member of the U.S. Court of Appeals Judicial Conference for the Fourth Circuit, and is admitted to practice before that court, the U.S. Supreme Court, and all N.C. state and federal district courts.

Today, he consults with a number of large medical practices on a myriad of regulatory and compliance issues, is very active with his non-profit Board work (a passion), and remains engaged with the healthcare community across an array of issues.
